The role of the Sales Manager is to develop new merchant relationships, and to negotiate profitable Card Acceptance agreements that enable a new merchant partner to accept American Express Cards as a method of payment. A key part of this role will be to work cross-functionally with other business areas (Pricing, Marketing, GCO, Risk) and requires the incumbent to develop relationships with a variety of prospects in various sectors.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a thorough understanding of the retail, travel, on-line, Insurance & Government sectors in addition to identifying new prospects and prioritising opportunities.

Key responsibilities can be summarised as:

  • Prioritise prospect pipeline and develop detailed approach strategies.
  • Build relationships with prospects (who have adamantly refused to accept American Express Cards historically) and develop a thorough understanding of issues and opportunities in order to develop partnership propositions.
  • Develop and present high impact proposals to prospects including financial analysis, marketing plans, and technology solutions.
  • Project Management - co-ordinate with and drive internal discussions with GCO, Finance, Marketing, and Implementation team to ensure a speedy contract signature and ensure a timely technical implementation and launch.
  • Deliver significant New Booked Charge Volumes (BCV) in line with company individual target and company targets.
  • Drive aggressive activation of all merchant locations signed, in line with company activation targets. (Activation = spend on an Amex Card within a new merchant location).

Required skills:

  • A proven track record of success in a B2B sales environment.
  • Very results oriented. A demonstrable drive to win, with an above average ability to drive results with internal and external stakeholders and decision makers.
  • Strong commercial awareness with a keen understanding of all prospect industries.
  • Excellent presentation, negotiation and relationship building skills. Ability to represent Amex at senior levels in prospect negotiations.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to learn quickly and work effectively in a fast-changing and challenging environment.
  • Self-motivated and self-sufficient but equally able to work well as part of a virtual team. (This is a field based role).
  • Willing and able to share best practices and key learning's.
  • Creative, persistent and resilient.
  • Highly organised - ability to prioritise, work well under pressure and able to project manage across multiple touch points.
  • High personal integrity and accountability.
  • Ability to travel anywhere within the UK.
  • Knowledge of Salesforce/ "The Challenger Sale" advantageous.
