Job Description

Excited to take on the challenge of strategically leading our tech team from the comfort of your home?

Eager to join a team of high-performing, yet humble A-players that simply get things done?

Excited to be a part a rapidly growing $250 billion+ industry while measurable improving people's lives?

If so, and you're a seasoned, marketing-oriented, strategic-thinking technology leader with lots of hands on full-stack experience, has built and led efficient development teams??? and has an incessant drive towards excellence, an unquenchable curiosity and a get-it-done now mentality, we'd love to talk.

We've posted this both as a CTO and VP of Engineering role as both equally describe the actual opportunity and the day-to-day authority and responsibilities. To be 100% clear, this involves both heavy hands-on coding as well as strategically building and managing our tech team.

We're really looking for a seasoned engineering leader who has made lots of mistakes, has learned from that and mastered the art of technical discipline and smart decision making.

Who We Are:

We're an 8-figure direct response company that's been profitable since day 1 of our founding in 2010. We're in the process of re-branding our company to Metabolic Living. As part of this, we're launching a branded e-commerce website that more accurately reflects our full suite of products we've developed.

And to help lead us into our next stage of growth, we're hiring a hands-on, strategic-thinking CTO to continue building out our small, but highly efficient tech team. We have a number of exciting projects we need a full-time CTO to lead development efforts on:
  • We're porting our outdated website at to our modernized content and commerce platform we're building at on Shopify (this work is already being done by an outside agency).
  • We're strategically integrating our in-house direct response platform that we've built over the past 8 years with Shopify so we can leverage the best of elements of each platform
  • An end-to-end assessment of tools we've built internally to determine what should be migrated to SaaS and what we should continue to develop/maintain
  • Developing strategy to extend our success into the mobile app world; as up until now, we've been 100 web-focused with no app, but we have a huge opportunity with our own app
  • Strategically guide the company's overall tech decisions as we continue on our path towards building out a billion-dollar lifestyle brand that penetrates into the offline retail channel
We're riding the $250+ billion annual tidal wave of demand for natural health products. And we're positioning our new brand to be right on top of that wave. It is an extremely exciting time for us now.

Our nutrition courses and exercise programs are designed to deliver the most results in the least time. For example, our exercise videos deliver the same or better benefits in just 15 minutes, 3 times a week than do traditional exercise programs that require 60 minutes, 5 times a week. Yes, really.

You can see an example of one of our exercise products at as our e-commerce happens on product-specific websites for now. All e-commerce will happen on as part of the re-branding.

We also formulate state-of-the-art nutritional supplements and functional foods that fuel your metabolism to generate the energy you need to consistently perform at your peak. For example, instead of taking weeks to notice a difference, it takes just days to feel better.

We practice what we preach: our company is designed so everyone both enjoys their work challenges while having plenty of time to do what they love to do the most in their life. We recruit only high-performing, humble people who produce in fast cycles, hold themselves accountable and have fun.

Who We Need:

We're scouring the U.S. for a full-time, hyper-talented CTO with in-depth, hands-on, full-stack web development experience, both building and leading highly efficient development teams. It is a remote/work-at-home position with a very flexible work/vacation schedule as lifestyle is hugely important to our company given what we do.

This opportunity is suited only for a high-performing CTO-caliber developer and technology leader with an integrative mindset and proven ability to get things done cleanly and on time. The ideal person is relishes being hands-on in all facets of web engineering from the browser to the code to the server.

As our CTO, you will optimize, support and manage our entire web infrastructure. You will decide what we should build vs. what we should leverage in the cloud / SaaS. You will have full authority to take our company's technology infrastructure to the next level.

Just as we obsess about creating healthy living products that get the most results in the least time, we're looking for someone equally obsessed about doing the same thing with beautiful, efficient code. And with smart decisions on build vs. buy. We really need a strong strategic thinker in this position.

As a marketing-focused company, the highest ROI on our technology investments are tied to marketing-related initiatives like funnel development, precision analytics, split testing, payment processing, etc. To that end, the more tech resources we can focus on marketing-oriented activities, the better.

Because we run a highly efficient, small team, your hands-on technology skills are just as important as your team building and leadership skills. Moreover, how fast you process information, how quickly (and accurately) you can cycle through work and how well you work with the rest of our team is crucial.

Finally, we're looking for someone who can collaborate in real-time with the company's marketing team. This can require real-time communication throughout the day based on our heavy advertising spend on Facebook, Google, which can reach upwards of $100k / day. The ability to turn a business conversation into an actionable set of dev tasks that you can jump on immediately is crucial.

What the Ideal Candidate Looks Like:
  • Deep experience as an end-to-end application/web architect responsible for every single part of the project including requirements gathering, project management, system architecture, infrastructure setup, coding, integrating with third parties and documenting and testing.
  • Highly marketing- and revenue-focused technology experience with heavy emphasis on e-commerce-related activities such as analytics, split testing, payment processing, etc.
  • 10+ years' experience as a software engineer/web developer with recent, applicable focus on database-driven web applications on a LAMP stack.
  • Familiar with various development, testing, and DevOps processes and techniques and can provide direction to a small technical team and the company on how to be efficient and nimble
  • Working knowledge with a variety of development and process (task tracking, build automation, load testing, etc.) and can guide the introduction and improvement of processes.
  • Expertise in solution architecture, with proven experience creating strategic plans and visions for technology and executing on the tactical efforts to get there.
  • Expert-level, working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; our design team creates most of the assets, but you'll be implementing, optimizing, troubleshooting, and adding functionality.
  • Ability to build complex PHP applications quickly, efficiently, and under pressure. Our application stack runs on CodeIgniter, so working knowledge of that framework is a plus.
  • Just as good with SQL as you are with PHP with ability to write ad-hoc queries for data extracts by hand, optimize tables with 100s of millions of rows, and built new, smart database schemas.
  • Familiarity with CDNs (especially Amazon S3 and CloudFront) and general web speed optimization design patterns and techniques.
  • Solid knowledge of Linux, Apache, and general infrastructure/server support so you can troubleshoot and optimize as needed with our hosting team.
  • You're a self-starter who can take initiative and run with the ball without having to be told what to do and you love analyzing seemingly intractable problems and devising creative solutions.
  • You're a strong project manager who can scope out technical requirements based on business needs, define deliverables, create a project plan and then execute and deliver upon that plan.
  • You're available during normal Eastern business hours (8 a.m. - 5 p.m. ET) with occasional off-hour support during critical business events.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Strategically building, managing and leader our technology team
  • Optimizing the feature set in our direct response software platform (LAMP), integrating with 3rd party tools, optimizing our web infrastructure and creating workflow automation modules.
  • Designing, maintaining and enhancing internal systems, programs and web applications, including e-commerce, marketing campaign tracking, content management and more.
  • Building and improving existing and new analytics and reports using MySQL, large datasets, and a custom-build replication and data warehouse engine.
  • Manage asset, code, and database deployments to managed servers and cloud servers, as well as building or finding tools to improve and automate the deployment and testing process.
  • Proactively suggest ways to improve any system you work with..... click apply for full job details
