This position within the Corporate Risk Management team is responsible for managing a team of AML Investigators and Sr. AML Investigators for Discover Bank (the Bank) and working with other operational business units that refer potential suspicious activity for investigation and reporting. This role requires an individual to demonstrate integrity, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision in an environment with strict deadlines, demonstrate exemplary attention to detail, excellent written communication skills, and the ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality with respect to highly sensitive information. The individual must also demonstrate an in-depth understanding of anti-money laundering laws and regulations, FinCEN and other industry guidance and interpretations, trends and typologies as they relate to money laundering, terrorist financing, and other white collar crimes, and the AML risks associated with various products, customers, and geographies serviced by the Bank. This role encompasses oversight, management, and mentorship of multiple levels of staff, ownership of productivity monitoring and managing regulatory deadlines, participation in the development and maintenance of policies and procedures, quality reviews and coaching, and routine preparation and distribution of metrics and reporting.

Individuals in this role are responsible for:
  • Monitoring daily, weekly, and monthly AML Alert and Case inventory and balancing workloads across the team to ensure ALL alert analysis and case investigations are completed within established service level agreements and regulatory time frames.
  • Ensuring appropriate reporting and controls are in place targeting each step of the Investigative process workflow.
  • Conducting routine quality review sampling of Investigator work product to ensure accuracy and identify areas of opportunity for remedial training.
  • Monitoring individual and Team level productivity and coordinating with peer Team Managers to ensure Alert and Case Investigations across the Bank are completed within appropriate timeframes.
  • Serving as subject matter expert, coaching Investigators, motivating employees, providing mentorship and identifying continuing education training opportunities for the Team and individuals as well as promoting career progression initiatives.
  • Recruiting, onboarding, and retaining top talent for the department. Reviewing high profile anti-money laundering investigations, requiring the utmost confidentiality, including, but not limited to terrorist financing, subpoenas, and litigation.
  • Managing individual performance evaluations throughout the year. Providing routine metrics and reporting identifying Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and Key Risk Indicators (KRI) to Management and other key stakeholders.
  • Monitoring incoming referrals for adequacy and timeliness and providing quantitative and qualitative feedback to the referring units. Continuously identifying opportunities for process improvements, escalating recommendations, and implementing changes and enhancements.
  • Participating in, managing, or chairing key project initiatives or committees.
  • Collaborating with key stakeholders within Corporate Risk Management and other Business Units (e.g. Business Technology, Law and Compliance, Fraud Strategy, etc.) to drive continuous program improvement initiatives.
  • Communicating clearly, both written and verbally, with individuals and groups external to Discover (e.g. Law Enforcement agencies, Regulatory Examiners, other Financial Institutions participating in 314(b) sharing initiatives, industry peers, , etc.).
  • Keeping abreast of industry news and events via internal and external training opportunities, AML specific conferences, workshops, and industry peer groups and ensuring learnings and industry awareness is communicated and instilled across the AML Investigations department
  • Effectively managing ambiguity and subjective information by independently researching and identifying actionable solutions.
  • Ensuring all compliance related issues and risk are brought to the immediate attention of management. Assisting management with implementation of new initiatives and special projects. Responding to urgent requests from Management with the utmost expediency.
  • Serving as a backup for the AML Department and Senior Managers.
  • Promote a risk-aware culture, ensure efficient and effective risk and compliance management practices by adhering to required standards and processes

Required Skills:
  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent years of experience
  • 5+ years experience
  • Significant previous BSA, AML, OFAC, KYC or similar industry experience required, including SAR filing and AML Investigations.
  • Intermediate or above experience in Microsoft Office applications required.
  • Leadership/coaching experience required.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Desired Skills:
  • Experience with Actimize transaction monitoring software preferred.
  • Previous process improvement and/or project management experience preferred.
  • CAMS Certification preferred
